2016 Spring Practice: Quarterbacks

It's springtime in the Commonwealth, which means it's time for the Racers to hit the field. Throughout spring practice GoRacers.com will take its annual look at each position of the 2016 edition of the Racer football team. Today, we begin our coverage with the quarterbacks.

Key Returners – KD Humphries had a record season last fall, finishing seventh in the voting for the 2015 STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year Award. He led the FCS in passing yards, completions, and attempts las season and broke several MSU records. Prior to the 2015 season, current MSU coach Casey Brockman held the records for passing yards in a single season and passing attempts in a season before Humphries surpassed him in 2015 with 3,778 yards on 330 attempts. The rising senior averaged 343.5 yards per game with 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Along with redshirt senior KD Humphries, redshirt freshmen Matthew Christian, and Houston Hartz and redshirt sophomore Hayden Sphire are also returning. Houston Hartz appeared in two games in the 2015 season, throwing 1-for-2 for a gain of two yards.

Key Losses – The quarterback position was one of the few unaffected by the graduation of 21 seniors last season. While the 2016 campaign may be the last for Humphries, he is currently the only quarterback on the roster that is an upperclassman.

Key Newcomers – Eli Oltean out of St. Joseph, Illinois is will join the Racers in the fall. Oltean helped take the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans to the semi-finals of the state tournament and an undefeated regular season. He was 223-for-404 in his three seasons with the Spartans and threw for 3,394 yards with 45 touchdowns.
