Four Racers Earn Postseason OVC Accolades
5/10/2016 8:00:00 PM | Softball
Shelbey Miller, Mason Robinson, Jessica Twaddle and Leah Kesel all earned postseason honors, the league announced Tuesday night at the 2016 OVC Softball Championship Banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn in Oxford, Alabama. Miller was named first-team All-OVC, while Robinson and Twaddle were named to the second team and Kesel was named to the All-Newcomer team.
Miller had an outstanding senior season in which she hit .327 and led the team in hits with 56, runs with 35, doubles with 13 and walks with 12. She helped lead an infield that is currently second in the nation in double plays at 0.65, trailing only UCLA. This is the third OVC award for Miller after being named to the All-Newcomer team in 2013 and earning second-team All-OVC honors in 2014.
Robinson in on the cusp of turning in the best season ever by a Murray State pitcher. Her current 1.75 ERA would be a single-season record for the Racers and would be the first sub-2.00 ERA by a starter in program history. Her five solo shutouts this season is also a single-season record and her 18 wins marks the second straight season she has won at least 15 games. Â This marks the second OVC honor for Robinson after being named to the All-Newcomer team in 2014.
Twaddle continued her brilliant career in 2016 by hitting .327 and leading the team in doubles at 13, triples at two and stolen bases at 20. In fact, after stealing just eight bases combined in her first two seasons, she was a near perfect 20-for-21 on the base paths this season. She set a single-season record for unassisted double plays at four and became the first Racer ever to turn two unassisted double plays in the same game. Twaddle has now earned an OVC accolade in each year of her career with All-Newcomer honors in 2014 and first-team honors in 2015.
Kesel has come into her own as a freshman an currently leads the team in batting average at .341. After joining the starting lineup in the middle of the season, she is currently third on the team in runs scored with 22 and third in stolen bases with eight. She has also racked up 10 multi-hit games, the fifth highest total on the team, which includes a perfect 4-for-4 performance against Southeast Missouri in March.
The four award winners and the rest of the Racers will open OVC Tournament play Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against top-seeded Jacksonville State at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
