Defending Champs Announce 2016 Schedule

After a 2015 season for the record books, in which second-year head coach Jeremy Groves led his club to an undefeated OVC season and a trip to the NCCA tournament, the Murray State women's soccer team will look for similar success in 2016. To achieve those goals, the Racers will have their work cut out for them according to the team's schedule that was released Friday.
"We want to challenge our team to get better and that's why we're playing three SEC teams and tough matches against Saint Louis, Arkansas State and Chattanooga," said Groves. "The pre-conference schedule will help us prepare for what is going to be another tough run through the OVC."
The Racers will begin their season with an exhibition at Evansville on August 10, which will be no easy task as the Purple Aces also qualified for the NCAA tournament a year ago. Murray State will then officially begin its 2016 campaign on the road in Ruston, Louisiana on August 19 against Louisiana Tech.
MSU will also make three separate road trips to SEC schools this season with matches at Alabama on August 21, Vanderbilt on September 1 and Kentucky on September 11. Murray State notched its first-ever win over an SEC opponent last season with a 2-1 victory at Mississippi State. The Racers almost repeated the feat in their NCAA first round match with Ole Miss, but fell short, 1-0.
Fans will able to get their first look at this year's Racers on August 26 when Racers open their 17th season at Cutchin Field, a place where they were undefeated last season, against Chattanooga. The Racers will also host Arkansas State on September 4, before closing out their non-conference segment on September 20 at Saint Louis.
On September 25, MSU will begin defense of its OVC crown at home when it takes on Morehead State, a team it edged in the 90th minute of the 2015 OVC tournament semifinals. Just five days later, on September 30, the Racers travel to Cape Girardeau to face the team they beat in extra time of the OVC championship game, Southeast Missouri.
Other OVC home matches for MSU this season include Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky on October 7 and 9 and Jacksonville State on October 21. For conference away fixtures the Racers will travel to UT Martin on October 2 and Eastern Illinois and SIUE on October 14 and 16.
Murray State will close out its 2016 home slate on October 23 against Belmont, followed by its regular-season finale at Austin Peay on October 27.
