Racers Top Pick In OVC Preseason Voting

The Murray State Racers were the overwhelming favorite in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll released Monday by the league office in Brentwood, Tenn.

Voting was conducted by the OVC's head coaches and sports information contacts. Voters weren't allowed to select their own team.

The Racers were picked for the top spot on the strength of 18 first place votes. MSU had 198 total points, ahead of second place Southeast Missouri with 150 points.

Tennessee Tech was third in the voting with 147 points with UT Martin (140), Jacksonville State (137) and Morehead State (134) making up the top-6. Tennessee Tech, UT Martin and Morehead State all received one first place vote. The bottom of the predicted finish included Austin Peay and SIUE each with 84 points, Belmont (67), Eastern Kentucky (49) and Eastern Illinois (21).

The Racers are coming off a record-setting season for Coach Jeremy Groves 2015. MSU was the first OVC champion to win undefeated at 10-0. MSU was 16-5 and set the program record for single season wins. They return OVC Player of the Year Harriet Withers and All-OVC first team selection Taylor Richerson and second team pick Alex Steigerwald.

An exhibition match Wednesday finds the Racers traveling to Evansville for a 7 p.m. start. The season opener is also away from home (Aug. 19) at Louisiana Tech. MSU's home opener at Cutchin Field is against Chattanooga.
