The Murray State men's golf team opened the fall portion of the 2016-17 season at home Monday at the MSU Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.

The Racers are fielding a pair of teams in their home event.

The MSU gold squad was in sixth place after they fired rounds of 290-295=585, ahead of the MSU blue team that had scores of 304-296=600 for a spot in seventh place.

Matthew Winder, a redshirt freshman, led the way for the gold team with scores of 70-72=142 and had a spot in 16th place, while Gabe Wheeler was in 21st place with rounds of 74-71=145. Other gold team scores included Lance Davis and Cole Manion in 35th place. Davis had scores of 71-80=151 and Manion had scores of 75-76=151. Nick Choate was in 47th place after scores of 80-76=156.

Junior Daniel Taylor led the blue team with a spot in 27th place after scores of 75-72=147. Austin Knight was in 33rd place with scores of 77-72=149 and Matthew Zakutney was in 35th place with rounds of 78-73. Avery Edwards had a spot in 44th place after rounds of 75-79=154 and Justin Wendling was in 51st place with scores of 77-80=157.

Green Bay's Joe Duchateau (71-66=137) and Austin Swafford of UT Martin (69-68=137) were the 36 hole leaders with Southern Illinois' Frankie Thomas (64-74=138) one shot back. Thomas had the low round of the day with a 7-under-par 64.

The final round begins Tuesday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

There were four eagles on the day among the 63 players in the field. In round one, UT Martin's Jack Story eagled the par-4 No. 3 hole and Trevis Bell of Southern Indiana made a two on the par-4 No. 7 hole. In the afternoon round there were two eagles with both coming at the par-5 17th. SIU's Brandon Carlson and Green Bay's George Kneiser each made a three on the No. 17 hole.
