Wheeler Paces Racers At EKU Classic

Results

The Murray State men's golf squad began play with 36 holes of competition Saturday at the EKU Classic at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Kentucky.

Sophomore Gabe Wheeler led the way for the Racers with a spot in 33^rd place with scores of 71-72 which was good for a total of 1-under-par 143.

Matthew Zakutney had 44^th place with scores of 73-72=145, while Avery Edwards fired rounds of 77-70=147 and had a spot in 59^th place. Austin Knight was in 66^th place with rounds of 73-76=149 and Daniel Taylor carded rounds of 75-82=157 for a spot in 98^th place.

Justin Wendling is playing the event for the Racers as an individual and was in 95^th place with scores of 77-79=156.

The Racers posted scores of 292-290=582 and were in 13^th place in the field of 18 teams, ahead of Morehead State (584) and behind Marshall (576).

Host EKU had the lead at 552, with Cleveland State (555), Ohio (556) and George Mason and Mercer each at 556 making up the top-5. Longwood (568), UT Martin (569), Eastern Michigan (571), Dayton and Florida Gulf Coast (574) made up the top-10.

Ty Herriott of Ohio was the overall individual leader after scores of 69-65 for a 6-under-par 134.

The University Club at Arlington is playing to a par of 72 and 6,623 yards.

This event marks EKU's first home since 2007. Local police and fire fighters are being honored during the tournament.
