Edwards Top Racer At EKU Classic

Freshman Avery Edwards posted the top finish for the Murray State men's golf team at the EKU Classic at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond, Kentucky.

After an opening 77, Edwards carded and even par 70 in Saturday's second round and finished Sunday's third round with a 2-under-par 68. His line of 77-70-68=215 was good for a 31st place finish for the Racers.

Gabe Wheeler placed 34th after scores of 71-72-72=216, while Matthew Zakutney got a share of 46th place with rounds of 73-72-74=219. Austin Knight placed 71st with scores of 73-76-75=224 and Daniel Taylor had scores of 75-82-84=241 and placed 100th.

Justin Wendling played the event for the Racers as an individual and had scores of 77-79-74=230 for a spot in 90th place.

The Racers placed 13th in the field of 18 teams after posting scores of 292-290-290=872. Murray State was fourth among the seven Ohio Valley Conference teams in the event. The Racers bested Morehead State (884), Eastern Illinois (904) and Tennessee State (908). Host Eastern Kentucky won their home event with a total score of 828, with UT Martin (857) placing seventh and SIUE (865) placing 11th.

EKU's Noah Combs was medalist with scores of 71-67-66=204. Marshall's Clark Robinson was one shot back at 71-68-66=205.

The University Club at Arlington played to a par of 70 and 6,623 yards.

The Racers are back into action in Madison, Illinois at gateway National Golf Club for the Derek Dolenc Classic (Sept. 26-27) hosted by SIUE.
