The Murray State softball team opened its fall non-championship season with a 4-0 win over Missouri-St. Louis, followed by a 1-0 loss to Southern Illinois Sunday at the Saluki Round Robin in Carbondale.
The Racers opened the day with a 4-0 win against the Tritons, thanks, in part, to the combine one-hitter from pitchers Amber Van Duyse and Mason Robinson. Van Duyse opened the game by tossing four hitless innings and was followed in the circle by Mason Robinson, whole allowed just one hit in the fifth innings.
Seniors Jessica Twaddle and Jocelynn Rodgers and freshman Jenny Homann and Kristen Bialek led MSU offensively with two hits each in the opener. Rodgers also drove in two of the four runs in the contest, while Bialek drove in one, as did Erika Downey. The Racers ended the game by outhitting the Tritons, 11-1.
In the second game, the Racers came up with three hits and left five on base, but were unable to score. The Salukis were having similar troubles crossing the plate, until Maddy Vermejan singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh to score Merri Ann Patterson for the win.
Twaddle led MSU in the game by going 2-for-3, while senior Maggie Glass followed at 1-for-3. Freshman Ellison Barrett took the loss in the circle for the Racers, allowing just one run on four hits with one strikeout over 2.2 innings. Junior Haven Campbell got the start for MSU, allowing four hits with one strikeouts and two walks over the first four innings.
The Racers will continue their fall season Sunday with a doubleheader against Division II Union (TN) at 1 p.m. at Racer Field.
