The Racers (1-4-1) concluded a tough non-conference schedule Tuesday with a 1-0 loss in double overtime at Saint Louis. Â Freshman Kaylyn Telfair made her first start in goal for the Racers replacing Alex Steigerwald. Telfair made 12 saves in the Saint Louis game with six in each half. The Racers have been successful in the Coach Jeremy Groves era for a lot of reasons with defense and goal keeping at the top of the list. Telfair's start at Saint Louis proved again the Racers' depth in goal. Steigerwald was a top keeper a year ago and Shelby Haworth was an outstanding keeper for the Racers in 2014. MSU has many options to go with when it comes to their last line of defense.
The Eagles (3-6-1) hosted Austin Peay Thursday and came away with a 1-0 loss in their OVC opener.
The Racers are looking to get their offense going after a slow start in the first six matches. MSU has been out-scored 15-5 overall, but in the last four matches, MSU has been held to only one goal. MSU has faced a tough schedule including three teams from the Southeastern Conference and Saint Louis this week, on of the top teams out of the Atlantic-10 Conference.
The Morehead State game marks the Racers' 17th opener in OVC play where they have a 7-7-2 mark. Last season, the Racers opened with a 4-3 home win over UT Martin. That win started MSU on its way to a 10-0 run to the OVC title as the only undefeated conference champion in league history. The Racers have won 11-straight OVC home games and haven't tasted defeat since Oct. 26, 2014 when Belmont beat them at Cutchin Field 2-0.Â
After their home match with Morehead State, the Racers hit the road next week for games at Southeast Missouri (Sept. 30) and UT Martin (Oct. 2). MSU returns to Cutchin Field (Oct. 7 & 9) for home games with Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky.
