Battle Of The Border - Racers & Govs For Bragging Rights

The athletics departments of Murray State and Austin Peay recently announced they'll begin a special competition that will enhance what is already one of the best rivalries not only in the Ohio Valley Conference, but also in NCAA Division I.

Heritage Bank is the proud sponsor of the Battle of the Border which will see the Racers and Governors compete throughout the school year in every sport. A point system will determine who has bragging rights at the end of the school year and the two schools will be volunteering to help make their communities better.

"It's been a long-standing rivalry between two bordering states and two excellent institutions," said John Peck, CEO of Heritage Bank. "We thought it would be fun to get into the fray on both sides of the state line and, at the same time, highlight the excellent sports histories and talented student athletes that represent Austin Peay State University and Murray State University."

The Racers and Govs will meet in many sports head to head, while in other clashes, their performances in an Ohio Valley Champion will weigh heavy. There are 67 available points, representing the 67 miles that separate the campuses.

"We're ready for the Battle of the Border," added Amy Futrell, Calloway County Market President. "I just want to say that banks don't have to be boring," Futrell laughingly commented. "Every day in our community we think it's important to lift up the many valued clients that we are privileged to work with. Murray State University is a tremendous community partner in Calloway County and this campaign will help us recognize that in a light-hearted way."

Football                      3 points   Head-to-head in their one regular season game
Basketball (Men's)                       6 points   3 points to the winner of each game played
Basketball (Women's)         6 points   3 points to the winner of each game played
Volleyball                               6 points   3 points to the winner of each game played
Baseball                                 6 points   2 points to the winner of each game played
Softball                                 6 points   3 points to the winner of each game played
Tennis (Women's)                         3 points   Head-to-head in their one regular season game
Soccer (Women's)             3 points   Head-to-head in their one regular season game
Golf (Men's)                             3 points   Points given for the best OVC Tournament finish
Golf (Women's)                3 points   Points given for the best OVC Tournament finish
Cross Country (Men's)                    3 points   Points given for the best OVC Tournament finish
Cross Country (Women's)       3 points   Points given for the best OVC Tournament finish
