The Murray State men's golf team heads into Tuesday's final round only three shots off the lead at the Derek Dolenc Invitational.
The two-day 54-hole event in Madison, Illinois, is being staged at Gateway National Golf Club where views of downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch are common.
On a breezy and cool day, the Racers posted rounds of 295-288=583 and trailed leader Missouri State who had scores of 290-290=580. Sharing second place with MSU was host SIUE with scores of 291-292=583.
Austin Knight led the way for the Racers with rounds of 71-73=144 (2-over-par) which was good for a spot in 11th place in the field of 87 players. MSU's lone senior, Matthew Zakutney, was in 15th place after scores of 73-72=145.
Other Murray State scores and places included Gabe Wheeler in 23rd place with rounds of 75-72=147 and Matthew Winder in 46th place with rounds of 76-77=153. Avery Edwards had scores of 81-77=152 and was in 43rd place.
Lance Davis is playing the event for the Racers as an individual and was in 85th place with scores of 80-86=166.
South Dakota (586), Bradley and Omaha (587), UT Martin (589), New Orleans (590), Northern Iowa (592) and Nicholls State (598) rounded out the top-10.
Tuesday's final round is a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Gateway National is playing to a par of 71 and a length of 7,092 yards.
Match Notes
On the morning after the death of golf legend Arnold Palmer, it was fitting that the field of 15 teams had a moment of silence before they began play at Gateway National. General Manager Shawn Barnes was the person who made it happen.
The Racers were first in the field of 15 teams in par-5 scoring as they played them 6-under-par as a team.
The Racers are second in the field with 16 total birdies. South Dakota is the leader with 17.
The overall individual leader is Missouri State's Jack Knoesel who had scores of 66-68=134 (8-under-par). South Dakota's Scott Fudenberg was in second place with scores of 67-71=138.
