The Murray State women's soccer team is heading to the 2017 NCAA soccer tournament after Miyah Watford
scored in overtime to defeat Eastern Kentucky 1-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship game played at MSU's Cutchin Field in Murray, Ky.
Put On Your Dancing Shoes
For the second time in three years, the Racers are going to the NCAA tournament. They'll face Tennessee of the Southeastern conference in the first round in Knoxville, Tenn.
For the first time in program history, Murray State sees it's RPI in the top 25 with an RPI ranking of 21. The Last time they made the NCAA Tournament, it was in the 120's
Third Times The Charm
This is the third NCAA appearance in program history for Murray State Soccer. The Racers faced Ole Miss in 2015 and Virginia Tech in 2009.
New Kids On The Block
The last five goals scored by the Racers have been credited to first year players. Rebecca Kubin
finished the regular season off with the game winning goal in the 1-0 match against Eastern Illinois and then scored both goals to push the Racers past SIU Edwardsville 2-1. Miyah Watford
, named the Ohio Valley Conference tournament MVP, scored game winning goals against Southeast Missouri in the semifinals and the overtime winner against Eastern Kentucky.
With the win against EKU on Sunday, Jeremy Groves
earned his 50th
career win with the Racers, bringing his four year record to 50-20-6.
Coming In Hot
Murray State is riding a six-game winning streak, and is 9-0-2 since losing to Saint Louis on September 17.
A Select Few
Only four teams in the country have one loss or fewer, and the Racers are one of them with a 15-1-2 record. The other three are Sanford, UCF and Milwaukee.
Finally Got One
Coming into the OVC tournament final against EKU, the Racer hadn't scored off a corner kick in the previous 108 attempts. The 109th
attempt was were that streak ended.
Records Keep Falling
is now the winningest goalkeeper in Racers history, currently with 33 career wins. Steigerwald also has the most single season victories as a keeper with 15 and is tied for most single season shutouts with 10.
You Can't Go Through Walls
Since letting up three goals to Little Rock on September 8, the Racers have allowed just four goals and recorded 10 of their 11 shutouts in this span.
Better Late Then Never
20 of the 29 goals scored by the Racers this year have come in the second half or in overtime.
Know Thy Foe
Tennessee finished fourth in the SEC with a conference record of 6-3-1 and an overall record of 14-4-1. The last game they played was against Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament, where they lost 1-0.
The Volunteers and Racers only shared one common opponent this year, and that was Belmont. Tennessee defeated the Bruins 3-0 while Murray State was victorious with a 1-0 win.
Khadija Shaw leads Tennessee in goal (14) and points (33). Overall as a team, they have 43 goals and 43 assists while just letting up 17 goals this year. Shae Yanez has made 60 saves and holds a 14-4-1 overall record with a .88 GAA and 7 shutouts
Last Time They Met
You have to look back to 2015 when the Racers made the trip down to Knoxville on September 6. Tennessee was able to come away with a 3-0 win over the Racer.
All Time Record
Murray State has been unable to secure a win in the previous two attempts, with a 3-0 loss in 2015 and a 6-1 loss in 2002. Both games were in Knoxville.
Murray State or Tennessee will play the winner of UCF and Washington State in the next round on November 17 or 19.
