Racers Blank Samford To Open Play In Birmingham

The Murray State softball team opened play in the 2017 Samford/UAB Classic by shutting out one of the two host teams, Samford, 11-0, Friday at the Bulldog Softball Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
In the first three innings of the game, neither team was able to gain an advantage as there was just one hit by each team over the first three stanzas. In the fourth, the Racers (9-2) broke the scoreless tie on a RBI-single from Cayla Levins that scored pinch runner Kristen Bialek. Bialek pinch ran for Taylor Odom who reached base on the first of four errors committed by Samford in the game.
In the fifth, Brenna Finck scored on throwing error by the Bulldogs, after her and Jessica Twaddle each reached on singles earlier in the inning. In the next at bat, Jocelynn Rodgers blasted her third home run of the season to score Twaddle and make it 4-0, Murray State.
MSU erased any hopes of a rally by Samford in the top of the seventh as they scored seven runs on four hits and one error. Levins and Erika Downey each drove in one run in the inning on RBI-singles, while Leah Kesel added to MSU's tally by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Levins would go on to score in the frame on an illegal pitch before Odom and Rodgers capped the scoring at 11-0 with back-to-back doubles.
Mason Robinson advanced to 7-1 on the season with the complete game shutout, her second of the year, by allowing just three hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Finck, Twaddle, Rodgers and Levins each had two hits in the game, accounting for eight of MSU's total 11 hits in the contest.
The Racers will return to action in the 2017 Samford/UAB Classic Saturday when play shifts across town to Mary Bowers Field on the campus of UAB. MSU will open play on day two at 11 a.m. with a rematch against Samford, followed by a 3:30 p.m. showdown with the host Blazers.
