The Murray State Racers managed to handle sub-freezing temperatures and even colder wind chill factors, to gain a fourth place finish Tuesday at the Grover Page Classic at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
The Racers carded scores of 302-292-306=900 for a spot in fourth place behind third place Tennessee Tech (894), second place Samford (886) and first place UT Martin (873).
Matthew Winder led the Racers with a spot in sixth place after rounds of 74-71-75-=220, while Gabe Wheeler earned a spot in 17th place on scores of 74-78-74=226. It was a 23rd place showing for Avery Edwards after rounds of 76-75-77=228. Austin Knight placed 28th after scores of 78-73-80=231 and Matthew Zakutney was in 30th place with scores of 78-73-81=232.
Lance Davis was 45th as he played the event for Murray State as an individual with scores of 79-84-80=243.
The rest of the field included New Orleans (908), John A. Logan (908), Union (TN) (911) and Tennessee State (947).
The course at Jackson CC played to a Par-72 and a length of 6,776 yards.
One thing is guaranteed, the Racers will have a better a climate to play in (March 24-26) in Lake Worth, Florida. MSU is in the field at the FAU Slomin Autism Championship at Fountains Country Club where they placed sixth a year ago.
Match Notes
The event at the Jackson Country Club was one of the coldest for the Racers in recent memory.
Winder was first in the field with 16 birdies and second in par-5 scoring with stroke average of 4.33. Edwards was eighth at 4.58.
Zakutney was fifth in par-3 scoring at 3.17.
