Racers Have Work To Do At OVC Championship

The Murray State men's golf team began play at the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Championship at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Playing the Fighting Joe course at The Shoals, the Racers posted a round of 10-over-par 298 in Monday's opening round and had a spot in eighth place. The field was chasing leader SIUE who posted a 6-under-par 282.

MSU's only senior, Matthew Zakutney, led the way in round one with a spot in eighth place after a 1-over-par 73. Avery Edwards followed with a 74 and was in 21st place, while Matthew Winder had a share of 32nd place with a 75. Gabe Wheeler had a 76 and was in 35th place, while Austin Knight was in 39th place with a 77.

After SIUE with a 282, the rest of the top-5 included Jacksonville State (285), Eastern Kentucky (286), Austin Peay (289) and Tennessee Tech (291). Morehead State (293) was in sixth place with UT Martin (294), the Racers (298), Belmont (305), Tennessee State (312) and Eastern Illinois (322) making up the rest of the 11 team field.

Matthew Zakutney is getting his last crack at the OVC Championship and is appearing in his third event after playing here at The Shoals as a freshman in 2014 and again last year as a junior in 2016. His first round 73 today marks his lowest at this event in six rounds. His previous low was a 74 as a freshman in 2014.

Avery Edwards, Matthew Winder and Zakutney are three of 16 players that managed the par-4 holes at The Shoals under par. Edwards and Zakutney were 1-under-par and Winder was 2-under-par today.

Zakutney was fourth in the field with five birdies.

The OVC Championship also has Heritage Bank Battle of the Border implications. In this season-long rivalry contest between the Racers and Austin Peay Governors, the Racers have already clinched the traveling trophy. However, bragging rights in golf are on the line as APSU shot a 289 in round one and lead the Racers by nine shots.

The Racers will be paired with Belmont and UT Martin in Tuesday's round two. MSU's first shot will be struck by Austin Knight at 8:50 a.m.
