MSU Spring Tournament History
The Murray State women's golf team is ready to host the Jan Weaver Invitational Friday and Saturday at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.
Â
The 54-hole event honors the late Jan Weaver who was one of the most loyal supporters of Murray State University and Racer Athletics when she passed away in 2009. Her husband Dick Weaver is still very active in all things Murray.
Â
The tournament is the Racers' final event before they play in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship at the end of the month.
Â
The field of eight visiting teams join the Racers this week including Alabama State, Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Belmont, Lipscomb, Louisiana Monroe, Northern Kentucky, South Alabama, Tennessee State and Western Kentucky. The schedule of events calls for a shotgun start for Friday and Saturday of 8:30 a.m. 36 holes of play is set for Friday and the final round on Saturday is 18 holes. Admission is free and fans are invited to come out and watch the action.
Â
Since the first staging of the event in 2003, the Racers have won eight of the 14 titles, but are looking for their first since 2014. Morehead State won the title a year ago with a score of 935 as they bested the Racers by three shots. The Racers have been a hot team of late with back-to-back wins coming into this week as they won titles at the Spring Citrus Challenge in Sorrento, Fla., and at the Kirk-Panther Intercollegiate in Stockbridge, Ga. A win this weekend at home will give the Racers five wins in the 2016-17 season and match the program record that was set in the 2013-14 season.
Â
Murray State's Moa Folke is the defending medalist from 2016. She won the title with scores of 75-76-72=223 to get a two-shot win over Morehead State's Katie Rice. If Folke can win, she matches Delaney Howson who won back-to-back championships in 2013 and 2014.
Â
Folke, the OVC champion from 2016, will be joined in the MSU starting lineup by Lucila Puente, Linette Holmslykke, Raeysha Surendran and Anna Moore.
Â
MSU's second team consists of Jane Watts, Sydney Kelley, Nadine Innes, Earlena Sheets and Leah Rose Judd.
Â
About Jan Weaver
Jan Weaver was an avid supporter of Murray State University and the Murray community for many years. Her husband Dick is still very active in civic and university activities.
Â
Jan was a longtime teacher and education administrator. She served her students for more than 40 years at the high school and college level. Her tenure at Murray State in the College of Education (1985-97) included serving as dean of the department.
Â
Along with her husband, Dick, the two have helped Racer Athletics back up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields. They have assisted in many ways, but none tops their 1997 accomplishment. Through the Weaver's support, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the-art academic center. The Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997. The center is still a vital part of helping MSU student-athletes succeed in the class room.
