Racers Take Commanding Lead At Jan Weaver Invitational

The Murray State women's golf team looks like they're ready to post their third straight win after they jumped to a 22-shot lead after the first two rounds of the Jan Weaver Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.

The Racers carded scores of 299-297=596 and can tie the program record with their fifth win of the 2016-17 season with a successful final round on Saturday.

MSU's 596 was ahead of second place Western Kentucky (618) and third place Louisiana-Monroe (620). Arkansas State (621) and Austin Peay (631) made up the rest of the top-5 in the field of 10 teams.

Murray State's Moa Folke was the leader after she had scores of 75-73=148. She had a one-shot lead over teammate Linette Holmslykke who had scores of of 73-76=149 and Arkansas State's Marisa Marquez who had scores of 73-76=149.

Other Racer scores included Lucila Puente and Anna Moore sharing fourth place. Puente had scores of 74-77=151, while Moore posted scores of 77-74=151. Raeysha Surendran was in 11th place after rounds of 80-74=154.

MSU's second team was in eighth place after scores of 324-316=640.

Jane Watts was in 13th place after scores of 77-78=155, while Sydney Kelley was in 25th place after rounds of 82-77=159. Nadine Innes shared 25th place after scores of 79-80=159. Earlena Sheets was in 49th place with scores of 86-81=167. Leah Rose was in 56th place after rounds of 87-85=172.

The final round of the event starts Saturday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

How does a team build such a large lead over 36 holes? Very simple. MSU had four of the top-5 scores in the field of 60 players.

Moore is first against the field in par-4 scoring at 4.05, while Surendran and Folke are tied for second in par-3 scoring at 2.88. Folke also leads in par-5 scoring at 4.75.

Since the first staging of the event in 2003, the Racers are looking for their ninth title in 15 tries.

If the Racers can win on Saturday, they'll match the 2013-14 MSU team with a total of five wins in a season.

Murray State's Moa Folke is the defending medalist from 2016 and can match Delaney Howson who won back-to-back championships in 2013 and 2014 as the second to win in back-to-back years.

The 54-hole event honors the late Jan Weaver who was one of the most loyal supporters of Murray State University and Racer Athletics when she passed away in 2009. Her husband Dick Weaver is still very active in all things Murray.
