Gutzler and Sims Headline All-OVC Honors

Murray State's Brandon Gutzler was a First Team All-OVC Selection and Davis Sims was named the OVC Rookie of the Year to headline the Racers' All-OVC accolades announced Tuesday by the league office. Ryan Perkins was also named to the All-Freshman Team and joins Sims in that honor.
Gutzler had one of the best seasons in program history in 2017 as he hit .360 with 16 home runs and 70 RBIs. Both the 16 homers and 70 ribbies are the second most by a Racer for a single season in MSU history. Gutzler's 39 RBIs during league play ranked second in the conference and his 48 hits were the fifth most in OVC play. Gutzler also added 15 doubles on the year and had a .644 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .425.
Gutzler led the Racers with 23 multi-hit games and had a team-best 19 games with two or more RBIs this season. Earlier this year, Gutzler reached base safely in 44 consecutive games, which was the longest active streak in the country at the time it ended.
Sims led the Racers with 17 doubles this season, a mark that ranked seventh in the league. He also hit .316 on the year, had 10 homers and was second on the squad with 49 RBIs. During conference play, Sims hit .363 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 35 ribbies. He also collected multiple hits in 16 games and had 11 multi-RBI games. Sims becomes the first Racer to win Rookie of the Year honors in program history. The award dates back to 2010.
Perkins hit .281 on the season, was second on the team with 12 home runs and was tied for third with 43 RBIs. He also stole seven bases and slugged .516 on the year. Perkins also joined Sims with 16 multi-hit and 11 multi-RBI games in 2017.
Gutzler, Sims, Perkins and the rest of the Racers open OVC Tournament play Wednesday against Belmont in a 3 p.m. contest. It is MSU's first trip to the tournament since 2010.
