Four Newcomers Score In Racers' Exhibition Win over Evansville

The Murray State women's soccer team got the 2017 preseason going in style with a 5-0 exhibition win over the Evansville Purple Aces at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Four newcomers scored for the Racers, with a pair of goals coming from Miyah Watford. Freshmen Rebecca Kubin and Izzy Heckman also scored, while junior Caroline Ashton scored off an assist by MSU's two-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Harriet Withers.
"We had three game goals today," said MSU head coach Jeremy Groves. "What we wanted to do was possess the ball and we did that, we wanted to defend well on individual one verses one and we did that. We wanted to stay compacted defensively and we did that. We didn't concentrate on defending as much in the spring, but what we did do was purely work on creating angles and movement off the ball and we were good on that today too."
Watford, a sophomore transfer from Samford, scored in the 33rd minute to make for a 1-0 lead. It was 2-0 Racers in the 35th minute when Kubin scored. Both goals were unassisted. The third goal from the Racers was Heckman in the 50th minute off a feed from senior Lyssie Wright. Watford scored again in the 58th minute on an assist from Kubin and Withers set up the last goal of the day for MSU from Ashton in the 72nd minute.
The final tally sheet showed dominance for the Racers as they led in shots 24-to-1. MSU put 11 shots on goal and held the Aces to none. Alex Steigerwald produced 57 minutes of shut-out goalkeeping, while Kaylyn Telfair completed the final 33 minutes to give the Racers a clean sheet.
The Racers play their second and final exhibition match Sunday at Cutchin Field when they host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at 1 p.m. MSU's season opener against Marshall (Aug. 20) is also at home.
