Racers Close Out Fall Season - Look Ahead To Spring

The Murray State softball team wrapped up their eight-game fall season last Saturday in a doubleheader against Lipscomb at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky. The Racers have competed in matchups against five competitors including John A. Logan, Lipscomb, Saint Louis, Shawnee Community College, and Southeast Illinois during the eight-game stretch.
"The fall season is always an exciting time to be able to play against different competition," said Murray State head softball coach Kara Amundson. "We got a chance to see a variety of opponents as well as a lot of different offensive and defensive options that we have on our team this year. Â It was a good starting point for us to be able to see what is working and what we need to get better at before our first tournament at Troy in February."
Results
John A. Logan (Sept. 28) Game 1
Murray State kicked off fall in a doubleheader against John A. Logan at Racer Field. MSU earned a 9-5 win over the Volunteers in the first contest, as pitcher Hannah James got things going on both sides for the Racers. James pitched four innings, recording six strikeouts and earning a win in her first start of the fall season. She also went 2-for-2 with two singles. Sierra Gilmore led the Racers offense by going 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs while Lexi Jones added a single and a home run in her three attempts at the plate.Â
John A. Logan (Sept. 28) Game 2
MSU finished the day with sweep over John A. Logan, as the Racers battled to 10-5 a win over the Vols. Lillie Goetz and Lexi Jones had solid production for the Racers offense. Goetz offered the Racers three runs after getting on base on a hit by pitch and going 2-for-2 with a triple and a single in the game. Jones contributed with two doubles and a single in four at-bats.Â
Saluki Fall Round Robin III (Sept. 30)Â
Murray State vs. Saint Louis UniversityÂ
The Racers stampeded Saint Louis 7-0 in a win during their first matchup of the Saluki Fall Round Robin III in Carbondale, Illinois. After a scoreless five innings for both squads, MSU erupted in the sixth inning with seven runs on seven hits. Notably, Sierra Gilmore hit a home run and scored four runs to spark the Racers offense within the stanza. Lillie Goetz and Brenna Finck each went 2-for-3 with two singles on the day, while Finck was also awarded a free base after a walk.Â
Murray State's pitching staff boasted a shutout against the Billikens off the efforts of Olivia Suski, Amber Van Duyse, and Ellison Barrett. Suski contributed two strikeouts while giving up only one hit in her four-inning, no-run effort. Barrett tossed two innings with one strikeout and a walk while Van Duyse wrapped up the day by throwing an inning and logging a strikeout of her own.Â
Murray State vs. Southern IllinoisÂ
MSU battled Southern Illinois in their final game of the tournament, falling to SIU 13-2 after an explosive 11-run third inning by the Salukis. Abby Shoulders gave some life to the Racers offense, batting 2-for-3 with two singles in the contest, while Sierra Gilmore delivered her second home run of the tournament. Hannah James pitched two innings and took the loss for the Racers, while Olivia Suski provided Murray State with 3.2 innings of relief.
Shawnee CC (Oct. 12) Game 1
The Racers caught fire in their return home to host a doubleheader against Shawnee Community College, as MSU bested the Saints 23-1. Murray State saw many Racers with multiple hits, including Logan Braundmeier who went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double. Lexi Jones added two home runs in her four at-bats, while Madison Culver went 3-for-4 was just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.Â
Also, notable for MSU was Jensen Striegel (2-for-3, two singles, two runs scored), Morgan Dodd (2-for-4, two singles, three runs scored), Lindsey Carroll (2-for-3, BB, triple, double), and Ellison Barrett (2-for-3 two singles, sac fly).Â
Murray State's pitching staff also had an impressive day, posting only one run in the seven-inning contest. Grace Vaughn tossed a strikeout, gave up two hits and two walks, and logged no runs in her three-inning effort. Hannah James helped out in the circle with two innings of her own, striking out four Saints and relinquishing no runs. Finally, Sophie Bingham made her fall debut in the circle, throwing two innings with two strikeouts, while surrendering one earned run and a walk.Â
Shawnee CC (Oct. 12) Game 2
The Racers completed the day with a sweep over Shawnee in a 10-0 win. The Racers found success but blasted in five runs in the sixth inning. Â Again, Murray State saw several Racers with multiple hits, this time with Lindsey Carroll who recorded a single, a double, and a triple in her four trips at the plate. Sierra Gilmore also went 3-for-4 with two singles and triple, while Carly St. George was a perfect 2-for-2 with two singles and a walk. Hannah James hit a double in two at-bats and added a sac fly and a walk on the day. Â
MSU pitched another fall shutout, with the trio of Ellison Barrett, Olivia Suski, and Amber Van Duyse. Barrett contributed four strikeouts while giving up two hits and a walk in her two-inning, no-run effort. Suski added a three-inning effort with three strikeouts and a hit while Van Duyse wrapped up the day by throwing two innings and logging two strikeouts of her own.
Lipscomb (Oct. 20) Game 1
Murray State wrapped their final two-game day of fall ball against Lipscomb, as the Bisons bested the Racers 10-1. Madison Culver was able to muster up some offense for the Racers in the sixth inning, blasting a double to bring Sierra Gilmore in for MSU's lone score of the game. Grace Vaughn also provided valuable innings of relief for the Racers in the circle to help the Racers in the game. Â
Lipscomb (Oct. 20) Game 2
In a late comeback effort by the Racers in their second game against Lipscomb, MSU finished in a 2-2 eighth inning draw with the Bisons. Lindsey Carroll contributed with a solo home run in her three at-bats. Morgan Dodd finished with a single and a run while Madison Culver went 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI. Pitcher Olivia Suski threw six innings with an impressive eight strikeouts, while only giving up two runs to the Bisons. Grace Vaughn offered relief in two innings of relief in the eight-inning contest, recording two strikeouts with no hits to end the game.Â
The Racers will be back in action this spring, as they travel to Troy, Alabama, to compete in their first tournament of the year in February.Â
