Program-High Fifteen Racers Earn Easton/NFCA Honors

Fifteen Murray State softball student-athletes have been honored by the Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association as All-America Scholar-Athletes for the 2017-2018 academic year, the organization announced earlier this month.

Among the fifteen Racers awarded are recent graduates Erika Downey  and Madison Feeney, 2018 seniors Brenna Finck, Lillie Goetz, Leah Kesel, Amber Van Duyse, and Grace Vaughn, juniors Kristen Bialek and Lexi Jones, sophomores Logan Braundmeier, Sierra Gilmore, Jensen Striegel and Olivia Suski, redshirt freshman Dani Walls, and former Racer Jennifer Homann.

The Racers finished 24th with a team GPA of 3.52 out of 113 Division I programs. The total GPA placed Murray State third out of the five OVC schools that submitted, behind only fourth-place Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and 13th-place UT Martin.Â

Murray State and UT Martin lead the way for the Ohio Valley Conference in Scholar Athlete selections, as each program accounted for 15 selections. SIUE contributed 12 while Eastern Kentucky followed with seven. The 15 honorees for the 2017-18 season marks a new program record for MSU, besting their previous record of 12 set after the 2015-16 season.Â

This season, 6,278 student-athletes were recognized with the award for their academic prowess from seven different categories, and representing over 400 different institutions. NCAA Division III led the way with 1,600 student-athletes followed by NCAA Division I with 1,311 honorees earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher for 2017-18 year.Â
