The Murray State volleyball team plays two more matches at home this weekend, taking on SIU Edwardsville, Friday evening before battling Eastern Illinois, Saturday afternoon.
The Murray State volleyball team played their first match of the season at Racer Arena, Saturday afternoon, a place they are 40-2 the last four seasons, and improved that record as they swept Eastern Kentucky for their first OVC win of the season. The Racers snapped a four-match losing streak to improve to 7-9 and 1-3 in the OVC while the Colonels fall to 3-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Junior Rachel Giustino led the Racers with 18 kills while hitting .302. She also added 11 digs for her fourth straight double-double. Sophomore Callie Anderton dished out 31 assists, including her 1,000th of her career in the first set, while also adding five kills on 11 total attacks for a .455 clip. On defense, sophomore Becca Fernandez led MSU with 21 digs while six different Racers registered a block.
Home Sweet Home
After sweeping EKU in the 2018 home opener, Saturday, the Racers are now 41-2 at Racer Arena over the past four seasons.
Going the Distance
In their last five matches against SIUE, the Racers have played five sets in each, winning four of them, including the 2016 OVC Championship match. However, SIUE took the most recent match, winning in five sets in Edwardsville last season.
Murray State currently has the top two kills leaders in the OVC. Junior Rachel Giustino averages 4.18 kills per set, the only player in the OVC to be above four, while senior Dacia Brown is second in the conference, averaging 3.70.

Scouting SIU Edwardsville
Winners of three straight, the Cougars sit at 3-1 in the OVC after struggling in non-conference action. Rachel McDonald was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week after registering 43 kills and 37 digs in two matches, including a 20-20 performance against UT Martin. Ellen LeMasters was named OVC Newcomer of the Week after tallying 25 kills and 29 digs while hitting .420 in the 2-0 week. As a team, the Cougars rank 24th in the nation in digs, averaging 17.21 per set. This leads to them getting more attacks as they average 37.81 per set, 28th in the nation.
Scouting Eastern Illinois
After winning their first OVC match of the season against SIUE, the Panthers have lost three straight conference matches with a win over Chicago State in between. Similar to SIUE, the Panthers rely on their back line defense as they are ranked 28th in the nation in digs at 17.13 per set with Anne Hughes ranked 22nd in the country, averaging 5.36 per set. They also rank 12th nationally in attacks per set, averaging 38.57. Laurel Bailey leads the team with 3.12 kills per set and Bailey Chandler paces the team with 5.95 assists per set.
