After dropping the first set to SIU Edwardsville, Saturday afternoon, the Murray State volleyball team came back to win the next three to down the Cougars in the regular-season finale for their 13th straight victory.
The Racers improve to 19-9 overall and 13-3 in the OVC while SIUE falls to 9-19 and 8-8 in conference play.
Dacia Brown led the offense again as she compiled 14 kills. Rachel Giustino was just behind her with 13 kills while finishing with a team-high 18 digs. Rachel Holthaus added nine kills of her own while hitting a match-high .429.
Ashley McBee dished out 44 assists and Becca Fernandez had 16 digs. Holthaus and Katirah Johnson each had four blocks to lead the team.
In the first set, the Racers won the first two points, but SIUE controlled the rest of the set as they claimed a 25-15 victory.
The Racers turned it around in the second set as they jumped out to a 10-6 lead. The Cougars cut their deficit to two at 12-10, but MSU responded with a 6-2 run to build a six-point lead, which proved to enough cushion as the Racers eventually took the set, 25-18.
The third set went back-and-forth early on as the set was tied at seven before the Racers won four straight points to take an 11-7 lead. Murray State continued to expand their lead with the help of a 9-1 run before taking the set on a kill by Giustino, 25-15.
In the fourth set, MSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three kills by Brown. However, SIUE clawed back to tie the set at 14, but the Racers responded with three straight points to take a lead they would not give up, as Murray State won the set, 25-20, to clinch the match.
Next up for the Racers is the OVC Tournament, which will begin Thursday at Austin Peay. Murray State will be the #2 seed with time and opponent to be determined.
