New Opponents, Racer Classic Highlight 2019 Softball Schedule

Murray State softball head coach Kara Amundson announced the Racers' Spring 2019 schedule Tuesday. 12 new opponents with contests against four 2018 NCAA tournament teams are a few highlights from the 2019 Murray State softball schedule.

The Racers will compete against 12 new opponents this year, including Alabama, Delaware, George Mason, Maine, Maryland, NC State, North Alabama, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, Texas Tech, UMBC, and Wichita State. Murray State also gets a few early opportunities to face off against four teams who qualified for the NCAA Tournament just a season ago when they take on Alabama, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, and Wichita State.

To begin the 2019 season, Murray State will travel to lower Alabama for the 2019 Troy Softball Tournament. Both Troy, the city, and Troy, the school, will play host to the Racers from Feb. 8-10. MSU will take on the host Trojans, Alabama and Maryland. From there, the Racers will head to the sunny beaches of Madeira, Florida, to compete in the Madeira Beach Invitational I Feb. 15-17. Murray State will face-off against five different opponents including Ball State, Butler, Delaware, George Mason, and South Dakota.

For the last weekend in February, the Racers will head over to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Fairfield Inn & Suites Crabtree Invitational. North Carolina State will play host to MSU from Feb. 22-24 where the navy and gold will take on the host Wolfpack, Georgia Southern, and UMBC. On March 1-3, MSU will take part in Southern Illinois' Coach B Classic for the third consecutive year with games against Kentucky, Saint Louis, Southern Illinois and Wichita State in a round robin/tournament format.

Back by popular demand, Amundson welcomes four teams to Racer Field for the third annual Racer Classic. The 10-game tournament comprised of squads from Northern Iowa, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Samford runs March 8-10 in Murray, Kentucky. Following the Racer Classic, the Racers will be back on the road for their final tournament before Ohio Valley Conference play, as they take part in the Memphis Softball Tournament from March 15-17. MSU will take on host Memphis Tigers along while taking on first-time opponents in Maine, North Alabama, and Texas Tech.

Other highlights of MSU's 2019 slate include the Racers' March 27 home opener against Memphis that begins a seven-game home stretch including doubleheader home OVC action against Tennessee State (March 29), Belmont (March 31), and Tennessee Tech (April 6). Also, an April 23 mid-week against North Alabama at Racer Field, a home doubleheader against rival Eastern Kentucky on April 26, and a pair of games and senior day celebration against OVC foe Morehead State on April 28 to round out regular-season OVC action. The Racers look to finish 2019 regular-season play in a mid-week contest at Western Kentucky on May 1.
