The Murray State Racers began play at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship at the Madison, Wisc., regional on Monday with a first round 307 as the Racers entered their fifth NCAA Championship with the No. 16 seed and ended day one with a spot in 16th place. A field of 18 squads is battling the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
Â
Anna Moore, a senior from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, carded Murray State's best score with a 1-over-par 73 on a day with medium wind and pleasant temperatures. Moore and the Racers started on the 10th hole. She made her first birdie at the par-4 18th for a 2-over-par 38, but she rallied with three birdies on the front nine (her second nine) including birdies at the par-3 8th and the par-4 9th. Moore had a spot in 26th place after the first 18 holes.
Â
Other Murray State scores included Moa Folke and Linette Holmslykke with a share of 66th place each on scores of 77. Raeshya Surendran fired an 80 and was in 85th place, while Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria was in 90th place after an 82.
Â
The Racers 307 put them in 16th place, ahead of 17th place IUPUI at 313 and North Dakota State at 315. MSU was one shot from 15th place Idaho at 306 and eight shots from Notre Dame at 299.
Â
The surprise of the day came from No. 8 seed Virginia who had the best score of the day with a 9-under 279 and a spot in first place ahead of No. 1 seed Duke at 283 and No. 2 seed Southern California at 285. The rest of the top-10 at the Madison regional included Arizona State (288), Oregon State (289), host Wisconsin (290), Illinois (292), Ohio State (293), Northwestern (294), Old Dominion, and Iowa State each at 295. Â
Â
Round 1 Notes
The Racers' score of 307 was above their season average of 300.4.
Â
Moving day is Tuesday at the Madison regional. The Racers will again be paired with IUPUI and North Dakota State as they were today. The Racers will look to play better than they did in round one.
Â
The University Ridge GC is playing to a par of 72 and a length of 6,313 yards.
Â
Golf Week writer Lance Ringler had some interesting observations as the NCAA Women's Golf Championship got underway at four regional sites in Madison, Tallahassee, San Francisco and Bryan, Texas. His tweet on the 2018 spring records for some of the teams at Madison, included a mention of the Racers. They've had a great spring to get to the NCAA's with a 92-8-0 mark with four runner-up and one win since February. Win/loss records in golf can be figured easily by how a team finishes in relation to the field they're competing against. For example, if the Racers win a 15-team event, they're 15-0. MSU enters the NCAA event this week having won their 11th Ohio Valley Conference title.
The OVC has more representation this week in Madison other than the Racers. Eastern Kentucky's Elsa Moberly is in the field as an individual. After the first 18, Moberly was in 90th place after an 82.
