Coombs Places Ninth At Kentucky State Amateur

Murray State sophomore golfer Connor Coombs came home with a ninth place showing at the 104^th Kentucky State Amateur Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect, Ky.

Coombs, from Central City, Ky., was a model of consistency in the 54 event and ended with identical rounds of 73-73-73=219. Racer junior Austin Knight (Hopkinsville, Ky.) placed 17^th on scores of 73-74-74=221, while incoming freshman Dalton Bagwell (Hopkinsville, Ky.) placed 59^th on rounds of 78-78-75=232.

There were two former Racers in the field as Josh Rhodes (Paducah, Ky.) and Hunter York (Hardin, Ky.) shared 11^th place. Rhodes had scores of 70-73-77=220, while York had scores of 74-74-72=220.

Fadhli Soetarso (-3) 71-71-71=213 won the event in a playoff over Justin Tereshko (-3) 72-71-70=213.

Round Two Results

Three of five Murray State golfers made the cut at the 104^th staging of the Kentucky State Amateur Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect, Ky.

MSU's Connor Coombs, Austin Knight and Dalton Bagwell advanced to Thursday's final round. Coombs had a spot in ninth place in the field of 151 players with scores of 73-73=146, while Austin Knight carded scores of 73-74=147 and had a spot in 13^th place. Bagwell had scores of 79-78=157 and was on the cut line at 68^th place. Quinn Eaton (81-77=158) and Carson Holmes (82-88=170) missed the cut.

The two former Racers in the field each made the cut including Josh Rhodes who was in third place on scores of 70-73=143 and Hunter York in 16^th place on scores of 74-74=148.

Murray State golfers Austin Knight and Connor Coombs led the way in a group of five current Racers competing this week at the 2018 Clark's Pump-N-Shop Kentucky State Amateur Championship.

The 104^th edition of the Commonwealth's biggest amateur event is being played at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect, Ky.

After Tuesday's first round, Knight and Coombs shared ninth place in the field of 151 competitors after each carded a 1-over-par 73. Also included in a group of five current MSU players was Dalton Bagwell in 71st place after a 79, Quinn Eaton in 94th place after an 81 and Carson Holmes in 101st place with an 82.

There are two former Racers in the field including Josh Rhodes who had a share of the first round lead at 2-under 70 and Hunter York was in 24^th place with a 74.

There will be a cut to the low 70 players after the second round on Wednesday with the final round planned for Thursday.
