GoRacers.com Tell us a little bit about what you are doing this summer at your internship.
Amber VanDuyse: This summer I have been working for BHP as a health, safety and environment (HSE) intern. BHP is a leading global resources company with many assets including petroleum. I am currently located at BHP's Petroleum Headquarters in Houston, Texas working on the 15th floor of our new corporate building. At BHP, I have been afforded many exciting opportunities including functioning as a member of our HSE A&I team, visiting field locations both on and off-shore, and participating in some of the other great internal programs that BHP has to offer.Â
GR: How will this internship help you get a job in your field after graduation?
AVD: I am extremely grateful that throughout the course of this internship I have been given opportunities that challenge me on a daily basis. The career path that I have chosen to pursue is often filled with obstacles and BHP has instilled in me the confidence to overcome those obstacles. BHP believes in giving their interns projects that will be of value to both the intern as well as the company. With having only a few weeks left in my internship, I can agree with this whole-heartedly as I have been empowered and given the tools to succeed not only at BHP but at any future work place.Â
AVD: What is something you have already learned this summer that you did not know before?
GR: One thing I've learned about myself over the course of this summer is the importance of taking time to be where your feet are. I think many of the people that know me well would agree with me that I am very "task oriented" and I prefer to be as efficient and time effective as possible. However, at BHP, some of the most knowledge I've obtained has come from taking twenty extra minutes to talk to a co-worker about their experiences in the industry. By engaging with the people around me and shifting my focus from my "to-do" list, I have learned an incredible amount of valuable information that I may have otherwise missed out on.Â
GR: What is the one thing you want to take away from this experience?
AVD: This experience has provided me with many opportunities to serve others. Whether that be working at the local food bank, helping out a co-worker, or looking out for the safety of an employee. When I was in the process of choosing a career path, I chose safety as I felt it was an opportunity to be a servant leader in the workforce. It is my personal opinion that as professionals move up in their career, it can be easy to lose sight of why you chose your career path initially. My goal from this experience is to continuously be reminded of why I chose safety and to be mindful of the fact that my job as a safety professional is first and foremost to serve others and place others above myself.Â
GR: What has been your favorite thing that you have done so far?
AVD: My favorite thing I've done at BHP to date has been visiting an off-shore platform. The platform I visited was located in the Gulf of Mexico and named Neptune. Before going to the platform, I had to an intense Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training which essentially prepared me for the possibility of a helicopter emergency. The training itself was riveting. On the actual platform, I shadowed the HSE Manager as well as met a lot of the guys working on the platform. Being able to experience the marine life, get a glimpse of different aspects of my future career, and make connections with some of the crew made for an incredible experience. The crew reminded me of my softball team; they functioned as a family and they truly needed each and every member to be successful. Overall, it was an experience that I am truly grateful for and will definitely never forget.Â
