I Know What You Did This Summer: Ellison Barrett

GoRacers.com concludes its series on summer internships by Racer student-athletes with softball's Ellison Barrett, a sophomore business administration major from Florence, Alabama. Barrett is spending her summer at the Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama.

GoRacers.com Tell us a little bit about what you are doing this summer at your internship.
Ellison Barrett: I am working at Redstone Arsenal Military Base in Huntsville, Alabama in the Prototype Integration Facility (PIF) Department. At the PIF, they provide rapid response solutions to the warfighter. As an intern here, I am exploring the business realm of the PIF. Most interns are pursuing engineering degrees so where they are building projects, I am doing the financial side of those projects. I am also exposing myself to many different areas of the base, including contracting, project management and public affairs. After touring these different departments, I will be returning next summer to work as an intern in one of those areas.Â
GR: How will this internship help you get a job in your field after graduation?
EB: This internship has been very beneficial to me finding a path for after college. I have always wanted to work at the Redstone Arsenal Military Base and have thoroughly enjoyed working at the PIF. I look forward to coming back next summer and hopefully establishing a job working here after college.
AVD: What is something you have already learned this summer that you did not know before?
EB: Before I started working on base, I didn't even know what I didn't know about the Arsenal. I used this summer, and my supervisor was super helpful in allowing me to do this, to explore different options offered here on base. I was able to do formal training and different departmental surveys which helped confirm that I would like to eventually return here after college.Â
GR: What is the one thing you want to take away from this experience?
EB: One thing I will be taking away from this summer is the importance of communication. I have met a lot of people throughout this summer, and communication was the main key to achieving success for different tasks assigned. I know this tool is super beneficial when it comes to softball, the classroom and especially just for communicating with people in general.Â
GR: What has been your favorite thing that you have done so far?
EB: My favorite part about this summer was all the tours I was able to attend on base. As the group of interns, we were able to tour the Systems Simulation, Software and Integration (S3I) Directorate. While we were there we did simulations in America's Army Lab, where they develop not only software for the warfighter but for phone apps and video games as well. We toured the Unmanned Aerial Systems Lab and got to crawl inside a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. I also saw how public affairs relays information to the public about what is going on in the U.S Army Aviation and Missile Research (AMRDEC) Department. It has been an awesome experience to see the different projects being developed at the PIF and what they do overall for the warfighter.
