Racers & Knight Lead At MSU Invitational

The Murray State men's golf team carries a five-shot lead into Tuesday's final round of the Racers' season opening event, the MSU Invitational, at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky.

By posting scores of 282-282 for a total of 4-under-par 564, the Racers lead fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Morehead State by five shots after the Eagles had rou
nds of 288-281=569. NCAA D-II teams Southern Indiana (571) and Delta State (572) were third and fourth in the 12-team lineup, while OVC foe UT Martin (579) was in fifth place.

Racer junior Austin Knight is part of a three-way tie for the medalist competition after scores of 68-70=138. He's tied with Southern Indiana's Zach Williams (70-68=138) and Morehead State's Joe Muschong (68-70=138).

Other Murray State scores and standings included Gabe Wheeler in fourth place after rounds of 69-70=139 and Dalton Bagwell in 17th place with rounds of 73-70=143. Connor Coombs was in 31st position after scores of 72-75=147 and Quinn Eaton was in 51st place after rounds of 80-72=152.

Justin Wendling led the Racers' three solo players in the field of 72 with a spot in 15th place on scores of 68-74=142. James Boone was 17th after carding the low score of the day for the entire field with a morning 4-under-par 67. He followed up with an afternoon 77 for a total of 144. MSU's Rhett Cardwell was in 36th place on scores of 76-72=148.

When Tuesday's final round begins at 9 a.m., the Racers will be trying for back-to-back wins in the MSU Invitational, which would mean 11 titles of the 15 years the event.

Knight is trying to become the Racers fourth medalist winner and the first since Preston French in 2013. The other titles for the Racers came in a run of three-straight by Nick Newcomb (2009), Will Hunt (2010) and Patrick Newcomb (2011).
