Racers Play Gateway National At SIUE Dolenc Invitational

The Murray State men's golf team tees it up for the fifth-consecutive season at the 2018 Derek Dolenc Invitational, hosted by SIUE at the Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Illinois.

The order of play calls for a 36-hole day Monday on an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start with the final round of 18 holes on Tuesday at the same time.

The Racers send out a starting lineup led by Gabe Wheeler who was MSU's top finisher at the EKU Classic (Sept. 15-16) with a 13th place finish on scores of 72-72-70=214. The rest of the Racers' lineup includes freshman Dalton Bagwell and Quinn Eaton as well as sophomore Connor Coombs and junior Justin Wendling. MSU's Rhett Cardwell is in the event as an individual.

Since playing Gateway in 2014, the Racers have a pair of top-10 finishes in the event that is played on a course that features spectacular views of the St. Louis Gateway Arch which is seen in the distance across the east side of the Mississippi River. MSU's top finish came in 2014 when they placed fourth and in 2017, MSU placed ninth. The Racers' scoring record in the event is held by Wheeler from 2017 (68-73-74=215) and Jordan Smith in 2014 (75-69-71=215).

Gateway National will play to a length of 7,092 yards and to a par of 71.

The field of 17 teams includes: Bradley, Creighton, DePaul, Drake, Eastern Illinois, Iowa Western CC, Loyola, Missouri State, Murray State, Northern Iowa, Omaha, SIUE, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, Valparaiso, Weber State and Western Illinois.
