Racers Begin Title Defense At Banister Classic With Spot In Second

The Murray State Racers carded an opening 304 and was three shots off the lead at the Chris Banister Classic women's golf tournament at Silver Springs Golf Course in Glencoe, Alabama.

MSU's 304 was just behind host and leader Jacksonville State (301) and ahead of third place Austin Peay (313). The rest of the field included JSU (B) (315), Tennessee Tech (324), Alabama State (335) and Tennessee State (364).

Racer senior Linette Holmslykke fired a 2-over-par 74 for a spot in fourth place, while freshman Sarah McDowell was in seventh with a 76. MSU's Raeshya Surendran and Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria shared eighth place as each shot a 77, while Jane Watts had an 83. Anna Moore was in 11th place and the top solo player in the event with a 78.

Holmlsykke was chasing medalist leader Paula Vega of Jacksonville State who carded a 69.

The Racers are back it Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. for round two as they attempt to win the Banister title for a third-consecutive season.

The Silver Springs Golf Course is part of Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and will play to a par-72 and 6,058 yards.
