Taking advantage of beautiful day, the Murray State baseball team was able to play an intra-scrimmage, Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field with Gray defeating Blue, 4-0, in seven innings.
After two scoreless innings pitched by Trevor McMurray and Jake Jones, Gray was able to break through against Jones as Ryan Perkins belted a solo home run to left-center field. The scoring did not stop there as Gray loaded the bases for Wes Schad who poked a two-run single through the left side to give his team a 3-0 lead.
After a couple of scoreless innings by Justin Thomas, Gray added an insurance run in the seventh. Tyler Duke started the inning with a base hit and stole second before coming around to score on a single by Brock Anderson.
McMurray teamed up with Connor Holden and Peyton Hayes to pitch the shutout for Gray. One of the best chances Blue had on the day was in the sixth when Jacob Pennington doubled down the right-field line to put runners on second and third with two outs but Holden induced a pop-up to second by Bryan Chilton to end the threat.
Head coach Dan Skirka is proud of how his team performed today and is excited about the upcoming season.
"It's always great to get out here, especially this time of year, so to see live pitching was phenomenal," said Skirka. "I believe we're way ahead of where we need to be right now with three weeks away and I'm looking forward to it."
The Racers open the season in less than three weeks when they open the season in Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on the defending Summit League champions Oral Roberts for a three-game series starting February 15.
