Racer Rewind: Racers Sweep First Home Outdoor Action of 2019
3/23/2020 3:37:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Like many athletic teams in the United States and across the globe, Murray State women's tennis saw the COVID-19 pandemic bring its season to a screeching halt. After the Racers went 7-1 to start 2020, marking their best start since 1999, they should be entering their third week of OVC competition – a road trip that featured matches against UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. Instead, Racer faithful will have to settle for pleasant memories of their last regular season meetings with these two opponents – a week that saw Murray State earn a pair of 4-3 victories in what began a four-match winning streak in 2019.
Murray State 4, UT Martin 3 (April 5, 2019)
In a match that served as the outdoor home opener for the Racers, Murray State put on a terrific display in singles competition at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Kentucky. Claire Chang (6-2, 6-1), Amina Hadzic (6-3, 6-3), Aarja Chakraborty (6-1, 6-2), and Sara Loncarevic (6-0, 6-3) all earned victories to provide four points and seal a win over UT Martin as the Racers improved to 3-1 in the OVC at the halfway point of the 2019 conference campaign.
"I am happy with the way we competed in singles today and with how we were able to find a way to come back from 2-0 down to get an important win." Today is one of those days that we have to be happy that we got the win. Winning the match after losing the doubles point is always tough, and I am very happy we were able to pull it off today," said MSU head coach Jorge Caetano about his team's performance that day.
Murray State 4, Southeast Missouri 3 (April 6, 2019)
A strong performance in singles fueled the Racers to their second win in as many days as Claire Chang (6-4, 6-1), Amina Hadzic (6-4, 6-4), Aarja Chakraborty (6-4, 6-1), and Sara Loncarevic (6-4, 6-3) prevailed in their respective matches to propel the Racers to another crucial conference victory.
"I was very pleased with singles and the energy we showed out there today. SEMO is a very good team, and their girls never give up. I am very happy with the way we were able to close out the match today," added Caetano.
After two victories in their first home conference matches of the 2019 season, the Racers found themselves in a great position as they improved to 4-1 against OVC competition with just three matches left to play.
