In the game of golf, the best you can do is complete a hole in one shot. A hole in one, or sometimes called an ace. Newcomb's ace is different in that it directly led to him becoming OVC champion.
Â
Nick Newcomb, who is being inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame with the class of 2020, along with his brother Patrick, made his famous tee shot in the final round at the 2008 OVC Championship in Paducah, Kentucky. Playing the par-3 second hole at 185 yards at the Country Club of Paducah, Newcomb hit what he described as a "knock down five iron," and it went into the hole on the fly for his first career hole-in-one in tournament play.
Â
The rare photos of the decisive moment show Newcomb's swing and him picking the ball out of the cup, while family members cheered. His ace propelled Newcomb to a final round two-under 70 and a total score of 216 and a one shot victory over OVC Golfer of the Year Phil Hendrickson of Eastern Kentucky. Newcomb took the lead for good with a birdie at the 17th hole and became the winner with a two-putt par at the 18th on scores of 75-71-70=216.
Â
Nick Newcomb recently became the manager of Murray State's Miller Memorial Golf Course.
