34 OVC Contests Highlight New-Look Conference Schedule
Murray State softball is excited to announce its game schedule for the 2021 season, as announced by head coach Kara Amundson on Monday.
"We are thankful and beyond excited to get started with the 2021 season. It's been a long road since having to end our season early last year, and the players are ready to get back to action. We are looking forward to the changes in our conference scheduling, especially after not getting to face conference opponents during the shortened 2020 campaign. We can't wait," said Amundson.
The Racers will open the year on February 12th against Southern Illinois to begin a four-game weekend at the Southern Mississippi Tournament in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Murray State will then head to Mobile, Alabama the following weekend to play in four contests at the South Alabama Tournament.
A five-game weekend in Auburn, Alabama on Feb. 26-28 will serve as the final nonconference tune-up before the Racers open OVC competition on March 5th on the road at UT Martin.
After a pandemic-shortened campaign did not allow the Racers to play a single home contest in 2020, the Racers will return to Racer Field for the first time since April 28, 2019 when they host Eastern Kentucky in the 2021 home opener on March 13th.
The most significant change to note in the 2021 schedule is an adjustment in format for Ohio Valley Conference play. The conference schedule will now feature teams playing a pair of midweek doubleheaders with their travel partner (one doubleheader on each campus) and a three-game weekend series with the remainder of the league (10 total opponents), increasing the conference schedule from the original 22-game format to 34 games.Â
The updates, approved by the OVC Council of Directors of Athletics, are intended to give teams the maximum flexibility and opportunity to complete as many games as possible while also limiting travel.
Finally, the OVC Tournament is set for May 13-15 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama. Due to challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament field will only consist of the top four teams as opposed to the traditional eight-team format that has been utilized in the past.
