Racers Build 10-Shot Lead At ASU Spring Classic

The Murray State men's golf team managed to get in all but five holes of their second round at the ASU Spring Kickoff before darkness halted play Sunday evening. The Racers held a 10-shot edge after the first 18 holes at Capitol Hill Golf Club in Prattville, Ala., on the Senator Course.

The Racers posted a 307 in round one and were 10 shots clear of second place Western Illinois (317). Alabama State (318), Savannah State (323), Chicago State (324) and Alabama A&M (348) rounded out the field of six teams.

MSU's Austin Knight carded a 73 to take the top spot in the field of 33 players, while teammate, Avery Edwards, was in third place on a score of 75. Quinn Eaton's 79 was good for a spot in seventh place and it gave the Racers three players in the top-10. Connor Coombs had a spot in 11^th place with an 80 and Walker Beck was in 26^th place after an 87. Tyler Powell is playing the event as an individual for the Racers and was in 11^th place with an 80.

The second round will be completed Monday morning with the final 18 set for the afternoon.

After this weekend in Prattville, the Racers continue by playing four March events including the Gulf Coast Collegiate (March 1-2) in Diamondhead, Miss., the Benbow Collegiate (March 8-10) in Jacksonville, Fla., the Bobby Nichols Collegiate (March 14-16) in Sevierville, Tenn., and the National Intercollegiate (March 29-30) in Greensboro, Ga. The Racers host the Murray State Invitational (April 5-6) at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn., before traveling to Nashville, Tenn. (April 12-13) for the Big Blue Intercollegiate.

The OVC Championship is once again at The Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala. (April 25-28) at the Fighting Joe course. It marks the seventh-straight and eighth overall time the event has been held on the course.
