Surendran Dazzles At Kiawah Island Classic 1st Round

Murray State senior cards a 3-under-par 69 on the strength of and eagle and a pair of birdies
Raeysha Surendran led the Racers with a 3-under-par 69 at the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country at the Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. where 41 teams and more than 200 players are competing.

Playing the Cougar Point course at Kiawah Island Resort, Surendran played the front nine in 34 after she made an eagle on the par-4 No. 8 hole and birdied the par-5 No. 9 hole. She made eight pars and birdie on the inward nine for a tidy 69 and a share of third place with Jordan Cornelius of Townson, each two shots behind leader, Faith DeLaGarza of Dallas Baptist.

The Racers had a solid start with a team 293 score that put them in third place, one shot behind Dallas Baptist and seven shots back from leader East Tennessee who had a score of 286. MSU's Payton Carter shot an even-par 72 and was in 11th place, while Briana McMinn was in 20th place with a 74 and Sarah Forsythe was in 93rd place on a 78. Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria was in 116th place on a score of 79.

The Racers are in a good spot to make the cut after 36 holes when the top-19 teams will play for the championship.

MSU's block of tee times Monday begin at 8:20 a.m. CT with Missouri State and IUPUI as playing partners.

About Murray State Women's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 28th season overall, with the founder of the program, Coach Velvet Milkman guiding the way as the only coach the Racers have ever had. She started the Murray State program in the 1993-94 school year and has coached championship-level student-athletes that have produced 12 OVC championships, the most of any coach at Murray State. Also serving for many years as the Murray State Senior Woman Administrator, Milkman did MSU Athletics a great service by serving as Interim Athletics Director from July 2018 through February 2019. Milkman is involved at the NCAA level shaping women's golf on a national scale. She served a four-year term (2009-12) on the NCAA Women's Golf Committee including two years as chair.
