Racers Slip Two Spots To Seventh At Nichols Intercollegiate

Murray State’s Austin Knight cards a 72 for the Racers’ low score of the second round
The Murray State men's golf team slipped two places after a second round 297 at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn. Â MSU's 36-hole mark of 582 was good for a spot in seventh place in the field of 15 teams.

Playing the same River course at the Sevierville Golf Club as in round one, the Racers followed up their score of 285 with a 297 and trailed sixth place Detroit Mercy (581) by four shots. Â UT Martin was the leader at 566, one shot ahead of Morehead State at 567.

MSU's Avery Edwards was in 16th place after scores of 68-75=143 and Austin Knight had scores of 73-72=145 and was in 23rd place. Connor Coombs had a spot in 32nd place after rounds of 71-76=147 and Tyler Powell was in 35th place on scores of 73-75=148, while Quinn Eaton had rounds of 74-76=149 for a spot in 40th place.

The third and final round for the Racers begins Tuesday at 10:50 a.m.

About Murray State Men's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 64th season overall and head Coach Eddie Hunt is in his 20th as the second coach in program history. Hunt took over the program in 2001. The founder of the Racer team was Coach Buddy Hewitt in 1959. Hewitt is a Murray State Hall of Famer, inducted in 1990. He was part of the famous Murray State football team that played in the 1948 Tangerine Bowl. The Racers have won Ohio Valley Conference championships four times (1971, 1987, 1991 and 2010). Hewitt won the first three titles and Hunt's team won it in 2010 as their most recent OVC championship. MSU has produced 11 all-time OVC Golfer of the Year winners: Bill Graham (1962, 1963), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Piggot (1971), Chris Carlson (1987), Adam Grogan (1996), Brandon Henson (2001), Nick Newcomb (2010), Cameron Carrico (2011) and Patrick Newcomb (2012, 2013).
