Coombs Leads Racers In Day One At MSU Invitational

Murray State senior Connor Coombs was the Murray State men's golf team leader after the first 36 holes of the MSU Invitational with a spot in fifth place at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee.

Coombs' rounds of 69-72=141 means he will start Tuesday's final round eight shots off the lead of Belmont's Evan Davis who carded scores of 68-65=133.

After being in fourth place with a 289 score in the morning round, the Racers fell back to sixth place with an afternoon 296 for a 585 total as Belmont led the event at 562. UT Martin was in second place at 564 with Southern Illinois (569), Austin Peay (577) and Evansville (583) making up the top-5.

Other Murray State scores and places included Avery Edwards in 23^rd place on round of 74-73=147 and Austin Knight with scores of 72-76=148 for a spot in 30^th position. Quinn Eaton was in 38^th place after carding rounds of 74-75=149 and Tyler Powell was in 56^th place on scores of 75-78=153.

The Racers have two players in as solo contestants including Carson Holmes who was in 30^th place on rounds of 76-72=148 and and Walker Beck in 38^th place on scores of 73-76=149.

The course at Greystone is playing to a Par of 72 and a length of 6,858 yards.

About Murray State Men's Golf
The Racers' program is in its 64th season overall and head Coach Eddie Hunt is in his 20th as the second coach in program history. Hunt took over the program in 2001. The founder of the Racer team was Coach Buddy Hewitt in 1959. Hewitt is a Murray State Hall of Famer, inducted in 1990. He was part of the famous Murray State football team that played in the 1948 Tangerine Bowl. The Racers have won Ohio Valley Conference championships four times (1971, 1987, 1991 and 2010). Hewitt won the first three titles and Hunt's team won it in 2010 as their most recent OVC championship. MSU has produced 11 all-time OVC Golfer of the Year winners: Bill Graham (1962, 1963), Ron Acree (1965), Chris Piggot (1971), Chris Carlson (1987), Adam Grogan (1996), Brandon Henson (2001), Nick Newcomb (2010), Cameron Carrico (2011) and Patrick Newcomb (2012, 2013).
