Carter Paces Racers In Fall Opener at Payne Stewart Memorial

The Racers got their fall season going at Rivercut GC in Springfield, Mo.

The Murray State women's golf team got in their first day of fall competition Monday at the Payne Stewart Memorial, being played at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.

An NCAA regional participant last spring, Murray State's Peyton Carter led the Racers with a spot in 40^th place on rounds of 78-76=154, while Alma Garcia gave the Racers a pair of players in the top-50 with a spot in 47^th place with a score line of 77-78=155. Other MSU scores and standings included McKenna Stahl in 52^nd place on rounds of 76-81=157, Eliza Ma Kho in 57^th place on scores of 81-77=158 and Ellie West in 79^th place on scores of 85-79=164.

The Racers have two players competing as solo players. Katherine Weir was in 62^nd place overall and was seventh among the 13 individuals on scores of 78-81-159. Kaitlyn Zieba was in 75^th place on scores of 79-84=163.

Freshmen Weir, West and Zieba played in their first career rounds as Racers.

The Racers were in 11^th place among the field of 15 teams after scores of 312-310=622.

Host Missouri State was the leader at 590, with UTEP (592), Creighton (593), Oklahoma City (594) and Arkansas State (595) rounding out the top-5.

There was a three-way tie in the medalist chase. Abby Cavaiani (Missouri State), Olivia Schmidt (Arkansas State) and Mackenzie Wilson (Wichita State) were tied at 2-under-par 142.

The event in southwest Missouri is the first for new Racer head coach Philip Nelson, who also played the Rivercut course once as a professional.

Tuesday's final round has an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
