The Racers travel to Waterloo, Ill., for The Valley event at Annbriar Golf Club
Overnight storms gave way to a cold and windy day in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship at Annbriar Golf Club in Waterloo, Illinois.
With scores rising on a tough weather day, the Murray State Racers turned in a gritty 325 for a spot in fifth place. The Racers shared fifth place with Illinois State and trailed fourth place Southern Illinois (323) and third place Belmont (322). Missouri State was the leader at 315 and a five-shot lead on Northern Iowa (320).
Murray State's Payton Carter posted a 79 in round one for a spot in ninth place. She was four shots behind leader Ryan Bender of Belmont who carded a 75. MSU freshman Kaitlyn Zieba birdied the 18th to move into 15th place with an 80.
The Racers will be paired with SIU and Illinois State in round two Monday morning and begin their set of five tee times at 10:20 a.m.
The MVC had its first women's golf championship in 1983, which makes the 2023 staging of the event the 40th competition for The Valley's top prize. Illinois State is the defending team champion and Drake's Kristen Giles is defending her individual championship.
Annbriar Golf Course opened in 1993 and was named the No. 3 course in the Prairie State in 2021. It has also hosted events on the Korn Ferry Tour from 2018-21. From 2012-17, Annbriar was named the No. 35 course in the USA by Golf Advisor.
