Moving Day – Carter Breaks To The Front At MVC Championship

The Racers are in the hunt and Carter in the lead at Annbriar GC in Waterloo, Ill.
On another day of windy and cool conditions, the Murray State Racers went from fifth to first and back to third as play was still going on Monday at the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship at Annbriar Golf Club in Waterloo, Illinois.
After a 325 in yesterday's opening round, the Racers stumbled coming in and posted a 314 in round two for a 639 total. The Racers are nine shots from first place Missouri State (630).
Having won the Ohio Valley Conference individual title a year ago, Murray State's Payton Carter is in a spot to win the Missouri Valley Conference in 2023. Her eagle at the par-5 No. 5 hole marked the only eagle in the event and it vaulted her to a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine. She made a bogey at No. 10, but reeled off seven-straight pars to navigate Annbriar's tough finishing holes. Carter's score line of 79-72=151 puts her in first place heading into the final round. Evansville's Kate Petrova is in second place, four shots back. There is also a group of four players that are five shots behind Carter.
The MVC had its first women's golf championship in 1983, which makes the 2023 staging of the event the 40th competition for The Valley's top prize. Illinois State is the defending team champion and Drake's Kristen Giles is defending her individual championship.
Annbriar Golf Course opened in 1993 and was named the No. 3 course in the Prairie State in 2021. It has also hosted events on the Korn Ferry Tour from 2018-21. From 2012-17, Annbriar was named the No. 35 course in the USA by Golf Advisor.
The Racers are in the final wave of teams which includes Belmont and Missouri State. Those tee times begin with MSU's Alma Garcia teeing off the No. 1 tee at 9:50 a.m.
