Carter & Shimkus Leads Racers At The Velvet

The Inaugural “The Velvet” tournament honors Coach Velvet Milkman – Founder of Racers’ women’s golf in 1993 and its coach for 29 years.
Payton Carter, Emily Shimkus gave the Murray State women's golf team at one-two punch in the first 36 holes of the Inaugural The Velvet Tournament, at the Country Club of Paducah, in Paducah, Kentucky.
The Velvet honors Murray State coaching great Velvet Milkman who retired in 2022 after launching the program in 1993 and nurturing it for 29 seasons.
Carter, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, held down first place on scores of 73-75=148 and had a three-shot lead on three others including Shimkus who carded scores of 78-73-151. Additionally, Emma Payne was in eighth position on scores of 74-79=153 and Ella Scherer (76-78=154) and Eliza Mae Kho (76-78=154) gave the Racers five players in the top-10.
With two squads in the field of 12 teams, the Racers' first team had first place on scores of 306-302=608. MSU leads Belmont by one shot heading into Tuesday's final round that begins at 8:30 a.m.
Murray State's second team was also playing well and was in fourth place on scores of 309-313=622.
