Murray State men’s golf takes on the Austin Peay Governors in the third Popeyes Battle of the Border match play event

The Murray State Racers men's golf team is set to take on rival Austin Peay in the third annual Popeyes Battle of the Border Match Play Saturday in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Hopkinsville Country Club has hosted every meeting in the Battle of the Border setting, where the Racers have won the first two meetings.

The one-day competition departs from typical stroke play events involving multiple teams. This even pits individual players against each other in match play where each hole is a single competition unto itself.

The Racers and Govs stage eight singles match play tandems in a head-to-head competition in which the first team to five points wins and gets bragging rights for another year. A win is worth one point and all eight matches will play until a winner is decided. If the team score is tied 4-4 after the eight matches, the tie will be broken by the team that has the largest total of combined winning margin. If that doesn't break the tie, each team will select one of their student-athletes and there will be a single sudden death playoff.

The first two meetings have provided close finishes as the Racers won the inaugural event in 2022 and again in 2023 each by a score of 5-4.

The first pairing tees off at 11: a.m. when Murray State's Derek Limberg takes on APSU's Morgan Robinson. The final match goes off the first tee at Hopkinsville Country Club at 11:56 a.m. when MSU's Jay Nimmo meets APSU's Jakob Falk Schollert.
