Racers Fall Short Of Comeback To Salukis

Murray State looks ahead to the rubber match with SIU on Sunday, April 14.
The Racers dropped the second game of the weekend series to the Southern Illinois Salukis, 4-3, on Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois.
Murray State led off the first inning with a solo home run from Drew Vogel for his eighth of the season. Ethan Krizen followed it up with an RBI base hit, scoring Riley Hawthorne to make it a 2-0 game going into the bottom of the second inning.
SIU answered back with two runs coming on a base hit to tie the game before taking the lead in the third with a solo home run. The Salukis added to their lead with another solo shot in the fourth, making it a 4-2 game through four innings of play.
Both teams were held scoreless until the eighth inning when Carson Garner drew the Racers closer with an RBI knock of his own to score Drew Vogel and make it a one-run contest, yet MSU was unable to push across the tying run in the final two frames.
The Racers doubled SIU in hits with eight to the Salukis' four. Garner pushed his consecutive reached-base streak to 25 games in a row. Vogel and Hawthorne were the only two Racers with multi-hit games, and Vogel scored two of Murray State's three runs.
With Jacob Pennington's three strikeouts on the day, he is now just two shy of tying the second-most career strikeouts in program history (232).
The rubber match is set for Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m. CT at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale.
