Murray State Drops Midweek Tilt To SEMO
4/16/2024 7:52:00 PM | Baseball
Taylor Howell and Dusty Mercer both hit three-run homers in the third inning.
SEMO jumped ahead first with a four-run third inning on an RBI single, a passed ball and a two-run double that hit the center field fence. Murray State answered back with six of their own in the home half of the frame with two three-run homers from Dustin Mercer and Taylor Howell. Mercer turned in his eighth long ball of the year and Howell his 12th.
The Redhawks drew closer with a run in the fourth scored on an error before taking the lead with eight runs put up in the sixth. A solo homer started the scoring to tie the game at 6 all, then a bases-loaded walk followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch gave SEMO an 8-6 lead.
The Redhawks then blew the game open with a bases-clearing double down the right field line followed by a pair of RBI singles to make it 13-6 going into the bottom half. John Orberson drew the Racers closer with a sacrifice fly to make it a six-run game going into the seventh.
A two-run home run by SEMO capped their scoring efforts on Tuesday and an RBI base hit from Riley Hawthorne made it 15-7.
Ryan Fender tossed two scoreless innings in his start on the mound, allowing a pair of hits, two walks and fanned one batter. Jonathan Hogart recorded his 12th multi-hit game of the year, Dan Tauken his 11th and the 10th such game recorded for Hawthorne. Carson Garner extended his reached-base streak to an impressive 27-straight games, and Drew Vogel extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Howell's three RBIs gave him his team-best 14th game with multiple RBIs. Murray State's three double plays in the field are the most they have turned thus far in 2024.
The Racers return to Missouri Valley play April 19-21 for a weekend series against the UIC Flames at Curtis Granderson Field in Chicago, Illinois.
