Valley Fortunes Looking Up For Racers

The Murray State men's golf team carded a first round 296 to get a spot in fifth place at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship at The Club at Porto Cima in Sunrise Beach, Missouri.

Playing golf in the Lake of the Ozarks, the Racers logged a solid found of golf on a difficult course. On the front-9, the Racers played holes 3, 6, 7 and 8 at 2-under-par. On the back-9, MSU scored well on holes 13 and 15 at 3-under par to get into the clubhouse with confidence for Monday's second round.

Southern Illinois held the first-round lead at 278, ahead of Missouri State (285), Valparaiso (291) and Belmont (295). The Racers were a shot ahead of Drake and Bradley each at 297.

Jay Nimmo led the Racers with an even-par 72 and had a spot in ninth place. He was five shots off the lead pace of 5-under-par 67 by Hampus Wijkstrom of Missouri State and Leon Keitz of SIU.

MSU's Brady Haake and Lennon Albans each carded a 74 to get a share of 20^th place.

Round two of the The Valley Championship gets under way Monday morning at 9 a.m. The Racers will be paired with Drake and Belmont.
