Racers Drop Series To Sycamores In Doubleheader
4/6/2024 10:14:00 PM | Baseball
Murray State played Indiana State with a tough defensive front throughout the series.
The Racers fell to Indiana State in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 2-1 in the first game and 6-4 in the second game and series finale, at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
The first game of the day and second of the series saw nine total hits throughout 10 innings of a defensive battle between the two programs. The Sycamores scored first with a solo home run in the second inning.
Six scoreless innings passed until the ninth inning when Dustin Mercer started the inning off with an infield single. Carson Garner then reached base on an infield pop up that turned into a fielder's choice. The ISU shortstop misplayed the pop fly and attempted to throw out Mercer at second base, but the ball sailed beyond the second baseman's glove to allow Mercer to reach safely.
After back-to-back pop outs, Dan Tauken drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Ethan Krizen. Krizen then drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk to tie and force the game into extra innings.
The Sycamores answered in the 10th with their second home run of the game to take the lead that would turn into the game-winning run.
Jacob Pennington went nine innings before being replaced in the 10th, allowing one run on three hits, three walks and fanning six batters.
In the series finale Indiana State jumped ahead to a 2-0 lead after a pair of RBI singles in the second and third innings. Jonathan Hogart then tied it in the bottom of the third with a two-run single, scoring Drew Vogel and Logan Bland.
The game remained tied in the fourth after both teams exchanged RBI base hits with Vogel tying the game up again in the bottom of the frame with an RBI base hit to score Tauken.
The Racers took a 4-3 lead in the sixth when Vogel hit a sacrifice fly to score Parker Estes. In the top of the eighth, Indiana State scored the go-ahead runs with a bases-clearing double to take the 6-4 lead.
Garner extended his reached-base streak to 23 games after the weekend, the longest streak of any Racer this season. Bland extended his hitting streak to five games.
Murray State travels to Oxford, Mississippi to face Ole Miss in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. CT at Swayze Field.
