The Racers fall to Indiana State to conclude 2024 season.
The Racers ended their record-breaking season in an elimination game to the Indiana State Sycamores, 11-4, on Thursday at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.
Murray State jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead in the second after Ethan Krizen dropped an RBI bunt single followed by a two-run base hit from Drew Vogel. The Sycamores answered back with four runs in the third on an RBI double, a two-run double and a sacrifice bunt.
Indiana State added two more in the fifth on a solo homer and an RBI double. Their lead was extended to six runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a pair of RBI singles.
Jonathan Hogart's solo home run in the seventh cut it to a 9-4 deficit, but the Sycamores added two more runs in the eighth on a two-run double.
The 2024 Racers baseball team set team records in at-bats (2,006), runs (464), base hits (591), home runs (102) and RBIs (437). With the 37 wins under head coach Dan Skirka the Racers totaled the second-most wins in a single season in program history and the most in the last 49 seasons of Murray State baseball, when Coach Johnny Reagan led MSU to its only 40-win season in 1975.
The Racers' second-place finish in the regular season standings in the Missouri Valley Conference ties the highest regular-season finish under Skirka and marks the highest finish as MVC members. With Skirka's 17 conference wins in 2024 he holds 76 career conference wins, putting him 24 wins shy of tying the third-most conference wins as a head coach in program history.
