Racers Win Wild Extra-Inning Battle In Oxford

Drew Vogel belted the go-ahead grand slam in the 15th to give the Racers the win.
The 15-inning game was the longest for Murray State since 2022, when they beat Illinois State 7-6 in 16 innings. Wednesday's win was the first time Murray State topped the Rebels since 2006, snapping an eight-game losing streak in Oxford.
The Rebels plated two runs in the first on a hit-by-pitch and a walk with the bases loaded. In the second inning, Dan Tauken led off with a single that landed on the left-field foul line before advancing to second on a walk drawn by Taylor Howell.
Ethan Krizen then put the Racers on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Tauken before Parker Estes drove in Howell with an RBI base hit to left field to tie the game at 2-2. After a scoreless third frame, the Rebels took back the lead with a solo homer in the home half of the fourth.
Ole Miss extended their lead with another solo home run to lead off the fifth followed by an RBI single. In the top of the sixth, Howell belted his team-leading 18th home run of the season to bring Murray State to within two runs.
The Rebels pushed ahead to a 7-3 lead in the sixth with an RBI double and a sac fly. In the top of the seventh, the Racers tied the game with a four-spot that started with an RBI double to the left-center gap off the bat of Drew Vogel. With one out on a 2-2 count, Jonathan Hogart delivered for Murray State with a game-tying three-run home run.
After keeping Ole Miss off the board in the home half, Murray State jumped ahead in the eighth on an RBI base hit from Krizen through the right side of the infield to score Riley Hawthorne. The Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out bases-loaded walk to force the game into extra innings.
The Racers and the Rebels both were held scoreless until the 15th inning. Hawthorne reached base with a one-out single followed by back-to-back walks from Krizen and Estes, bringing Drew Vogel to the plate. On a 1-0 count, Vogel put Murray State ahead with a go-ahead grand slam to break the tie.
The Rebels attempted a comeback with a solo home run and a base hit, but Malik Pogue closed the door to complete the road victory for Murray State.
Pogue earned the victory after tossing five innings allowing just one run on three hits, one walk and punching out five batters. With Howell's home run, he just one homer shy of tying the second-most single-season home runs in program history. Vogel's five RBIs sets a new career high for the redshirt junior, and was just the third such game recorded by a Racer in 2024.Â
Murray State looks on to hosting Valparaiso for its final Missouri Valley Conference of the home series May 10-12 at Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
